Netflix has announced that the Enola Holmes sequel has officially finished filming, releasing a short behind-the-scenes clip of Louis Partridge wrapping his scenes.
The clip, released on Twitter in January 2022, confirms that teenage detective Enola’s love interest Tewkesbury (played by Partridge) will officially return for the film, following speculation about whether his storyline would continue.
Millie Bobby Brown is reprising her role of Sherlock and Mycroft’s sleuthing sister in Enola Holmes 2, alongside Partridge and other returning cast members.
Justice League star Henry Cavill is returning to the franchise to play Sherlock in this sequel to last year’s hit film, which was watched by over 76 million households throughout September.
Directed by Killing Eve’s Harry Bradbeer, the rebellious Holmes sibling is set to embark on another adventure, solving a brand new mystery whilst trying to outrun her older brothers.
As the franchise is based on Nancy Springer’s book series, The Enola Holmes Mysteries, it’s likely that Enola Holmes 2 will follow the events of the second book – The Case of the Left-Handed Lady, which sees Enola search for a missing young girl with a talent for drawing.
“I can’t wait to collaborate again with my Enola Holmes family!” Milly Bobby Brown said in a statement. “Enola holds a special place in my heart – she’s strong, fearless, intelligent and brave. I look forward to fans seeing how her journey continues!”
Here’s everything we know so far about Enola Holmes 2, from which stars are returning for the sequel to what it’ll be about.
When is Enola Holmes 2 coming out?
Netflix is yet to announce the release date for Enola Holmes 2, but filming has now officially wrapped, so it seems likely it will premiere in 2022.
The first film in the franchise began production in July 2019 before arriving on Netflix in September 2020, so working on the basis that the sequel will follow the same timeline, the earliest we predict Enola Holmes 2 getting released is summer 2022.
Enola Holmes 2 cast
Enola Holmes stars Millie Bobby Brown, who plays the titular role, and Henry Cavill (Sherlock Holmes) are officially returning for this follow-up film. It wouldn’t be much of a sequel if the Enola Holmes herself didn’t feature.
It’s no surprise that Millie Bobby Brown is back for the sequel, having told EW last year that she “fell in love” with the character.
“I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, I’ll just do one movie, like, obviously…’ and then as soon as I went on set and I played [Enola], I fell in love with her, and she became part of my heart.
“Ultimately, this has been my favorite thing that I’ve ever done in my life,” she said. “So to do it all over again would be a dream.”
Meanwhile Louis Partridge will also be reprising his role as Tewkesbury, who was established as a love interest for Enola in the first film.
Partridge previously hinted at his involvement in the sequel with a recent comment on Millie Bobby Brown’s Instagram post announcing Enola Holmes 2. “The sequel is afoot #EnolaHolmes2,” she captioned a behind-the-scenes pic from the first film, while Partridge commented underneath with a cryptic winking emoji.
It’s not yet know how many scenes he’ll feature in in the sequel. However, with the first film laying the foundations for a potential romance between Enola and Tewkesbury, we wouldn’t be surprised if he made a cameo at least.
As for the supporting cast, we don’t know for certain who else from the first movie will be reprising their role for Enola Holmes 2, but hopefully Sam Claflin and Helena Bonham Carter will be back to play Enola’s strict older brother Mycroft and her free-spirited, suffragette mother Eudoria respectively.
It would make sense for Adeel Akhtar to return as Lestrade and Susie Wokoma as Edith, however, there may be no need for the return of Hattie Morahan (Lady Tewkesbury), David Bamber (Sir Whimbrel Tewkesbury), Frances de la Tour (The Dowager) or Fiona Shaw (Miss Harrison) to return, especially with Enola set to move onto another mystery.
What happened in the first Enola Holmes movie?
The first film in the franchise introduces viewers to Enola Holmes – the younger sister of Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes – who lives with their mother Eudoria in late-1800s England. Homeschooled her whole life by her mother, who taught her to be an independent, thinking young woman, Enola wakes up on her 16th birthday to find her mother missing with just birthday gifts left behind.
While Sherlock and Mycroft arrive to send Enola away to finishing school, Enola finds a secret message in the flower cards left by her mother and runs away, boarding a train whilst dressed as a man. On the train, she meets Viscount Tewkesbury, who has also run away from home but is unaware that an assassin, Linthorn, is trying to kill him. Enola narrowly saves Tewkesbury from being murdered by jumping off the train with him, after which they both travel to London and part ways.

Following Eudoria’s clues, Enola learns that her mother is part of a radical group of suffragettes after finding explosives in a safe house. Having escaped Linthorn once again, Enola decides to learn more about Viscount Tewkesbury by visiting his family’s estate. She then heads to Covent Garden, where she finds him selling flowers and warns him that he’s in danger. However, she’s tracked down by Inspector Lestrade, who has been asked to find her by Mycroft, and is sent to finishing school.
Miserable at Miss Harrison’s boarding school, Enola is soon rescued by Tewkesbury, who manages to sneak in, and the pair escape on Miss Harrison’s motorcycle and head to Tewkesbury’s family estate, having deduced that it was his uncle trying to kill him. Once they arrive, however, they’re confronted by Tewkesbury’s grandmother, who had organised the assassination of her grandson to stop him taking his father’s place in the House of Lords and voting in favour of women’s right to vote. She shoots him in the chest but he survives, revealing he was wearing a plate of armour underneath his clothes.
Enola says goodbye to Tewkesbury and heads back to London, deciphering a message in a newspaper meant for her but realising it was just a trap set by Sherlock and Mycroft. Sherlock suggests he should become Enola’s guardian to Mycroft and spots a clue from Enola, but decides not to look for her. When Enola heads back to her lodgings, she finds Eudoria waiting for her. She explains that she had to leave to enhance the cause of the suffragettes and was proud of the person Enola had become, but that it was time for her to go once again.
Enola Holmes 2 plot: How does the first film set up the sequel?
Netflix hasn’t revealed what Enola will be getting up to in Enola Holmes 2, but we can get a pretty good idea from Nancy Springer’s series of books, on which the films are based.
When we last saw Enola, she’d said goodbye to Tewkesbury and finally reunited with her mother before Eudoria left again to continue fighting for women’s rights. Now that Enola is under the guardianship of her other brother Sherlock and free to roam London as an amateur detective, the film’s ending set things up for Enola to head on another adventure in the upcoming sequel.
If Enola Holmes 2 is to follow the events of Springer’s second book in the franchise – The Case of the Left-Handed Lady – we’re likely to see Enola discover a hidden collection of charcoal drawings which belong to Lady Cecily, a girl who has recently disappeared without a trace.
Whilst evading capture by her brother Sherlock, Enola will head on a journey to find and save this missing girl without compromising her hidden identity.
